The aphthous ulcer, or canker sore as it is more commonly known, are a big pain. Who would ever imagine something so small to cause so much pain? Did you know that even though many people experience the pain of having a canker sore, they haven’t definitively found a reason why they occur?

Most people will call a canker sore a cold sore. Unfortunately while these two may appear the same and give you the same amount of discomfort they are very much different. An aphthous ulcer only affects the internal soft tissues of the mouth. A cold sore starts out on your lip and can spread to other areas around the mouth, but not inside the mouth. The cold sore is caused by a form of herpes virus, which makes it contagious, whereas the canker sore is not caused by a virus and is in turn not contagious.

While the cause of this annoyance is unknown, there are a few things that can onset of an aphthous ulcer. Stress is believed to be linked with the cause of many canker sores. We know that when your body is under a lot of undue stress, it can take a heavy toll on the body. Many times this heavy amount of stress is top reason why people get canker sores. Not eating the proper amount of nutrients can also lead to an ulcer. Having a deficiency of vitamin B-12, folic acid, zinc or iron, are linked with the occurrence of an aphthous ulcer. Blood work has been done on patients who currently had a canker sore, and much of the outcome has been linked with some sort of deficiency in the above mentioned nutrients.

Although there may not be a clear link to the cause, or a sure fire way to prevent the aphthous ulcer, it is known that if you eat healthy and stay away from foods that irritate your mouth you will run a lower risk of getting an ulcer. A softer toothbrush could also help prevent irritation to the gums and prevent their occurrence. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is a good practice to keep, and can reduce your chances of getting an ulcer.
