A colon ulcer is a sore inside the lining of the colon. It can cause bleeding and infection, and is the result of inflammation that has caused the cells of your colon to deteriorate. It can be a warning sign for more serious conditions such as Ulcerative Colitis, colon cancer, or the inflammatory bowel disease known as Crohn's disease.

If you have had at least one colon ulcer, and are now experiencing unusually severe abdominal pain, frequent fever, weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue you should pay a visit to your doctor. These are all common symptoms that could lead to a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis. Although it is unproven what the actual cause of this condition is, doctors have found that it effects the immune system. It can either be treated with drug therapy to set the condition into remission or surgery, for more severe cases.

A very small percentage of those diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis are at risk of developing colon cancer. Pre-cancerous cells can not be found at the time that your doctor tests you for a possible colon ulcer. However, the severity of the damage done to your colon can increase the chance of you developing this type of cancer. A colonoscopy can be done by your doctor to determine at any time if you have pre-cancerous cells present. The earlier your cancer is found, the easier it will be to effectively treat it.

Crohn's disease is in inflammatory bowel disease that is much like Ulcerative Colitis but can cause a lifetime of ongoing discomfort and complications. There has been no conclusive decision as to what the cause of the disease is, but most people who are diagnosed have someone in their family who also suffers from an Inflammatory Bowel Disease as well. It can be treated with drug therapy, surgery, and a restrictive diet.

For anyone who has a colon ulcer, it is best advised to get a thorough examination done in order to check you for any of these serious condition. Diagnosis of any of colon ulcer conditions early on can ensure that you will have an easier recovery.
