Occurring in mainly older people, a venous ulcer is often painless but can be very painful. While many people can go through their whole life without having one of these ulcers, 1 in 50 will develop one within their lifetime. What exactly is this type of ulcer, and is there a way to prevent it from coming back?

A venous ulcer appears most often on the leg. This type of ulcer is caused when there is an increased amount of pressure in the veins of the leg. When this pressure becomes too great, fluid will leak out of the veins under the skin. When this fluid reacts with the tissue under the skin, over time it will create thickening, swelling and damage to the area. Once this has happened the damaged skin will eventually break down to form an ulcer. Often painless in the early stages, if left untreated they can become larger and quite painful.

A venous ulcer is treated like many other types of open wounds. Every week the area must be dressed and cleaned. Along with dressing the wound, there are other types of treatment that must be done in order to eliminate the problem. Compression bandaging works in that it counteracts the area of high pressure and tries to get the area back to normalcy. Along with the compression bandaging of the leg, it is important to stay active. When you are active and on your feet, you are keeping normal blood flow constantly through the leg. Keeping your leg elevated at least three times a day is essential. The idea is to let gravity do its job, which is pull the blood and fluid to your heart.

Generally a venous ulcer will heal in about twelve weeks if treated immediately. If you are a smoker, you may be asked to stop, as the chemicals interfere with the skins ability to heal. The quicker you get this venous ulcer remedied; the odds of it reoccurring are less likely.
